My student has learned to follow his peers. This is a good strategy to teach our students. It works well for all of us. When we don’t know what to do we naturally look around and see what others are doing. However, problems using this strategy can arise in three areas for our individuals on the Autism Spectrum if that is the only strategy they know to use.
- If our individuals don’t have strong imitation skills, accurately mirroring what others are doing can be difficult.
- It is often difficult to teach individuals which behaviors to imitate and which to ignore.
- If our individuals aren’t with others doing the same thing, they don’t know what to do.
